Dilansir dari Reuters, Sony selalu mempertimbangkan kondisi pasar, potensi pertumbuhan bisnis, dan faktor lainnya. Pertimbangan ini sebagai bagian dari peninjauan berkelanjutan atas investasi dan operasi bisnisnya. “Sebagai bagian dari tinjauan ini, Sony akan mengonsolidasikan operasi manufakturnya dengan mengalihkan operasinya di Penang ke Selangor, untuk lebih meningkatkan efisiensi operasional,” kata Kepala Divisi Sumber Daya Manusia Sony Ric Ong yang berbasis di Penang, Sabtu, 5 Desember 2020. Operasional di pabrik akan berakhir pada 30 September dan akan ditutup pada akhir Maret 2022. Putusan ini akan mempengaruhi sekitar karyawan di Penang. Beberapa karyawan Penang akan dipindahkan ke pabrik lain. Penang di Semenanjung utara Malaysia selama beberapa dekade telah menjadi pusat manufaktur bagi banyak merek listrik dan elektronik asing, termasuk Intel Corp, Panasonic Corp, dan Dell Technologies Inc. Sony mulai beroperasi di Malaysia pada Oktober 1973. Di sana Sony memasarkan, menjual, dan melayani produk elektronik konsumen, serta produk dan solusi siaran dan profesional.
